The cabin filter cleans the air that comes into the interior of your car through the heating and air conditioning. It filters out dust, pollen and other airborne particles. If you’ve got a carbon activated cabin filter it also captures exhaust gasses and odours. Having clean air in your car is particularly important if you have any allergies or respiratory problems.
The cabin filter allows you to breathe clean air, by filtering bacteria, pollen and polluting substances. If you don’t change your cabin filter regularly, you may notice unpleasant odours and could have allergic reactions (sneezing, coughing, etc.)
When a cabin filter is clogged, it may partially block the airflow coming into your car. This can be problematic, especially when you need to defog the windows.
Having a clean cabin filter will maximise airflow and extend the life of your car’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.
Just as humans need oxygen to breathe, a car needs oxygen for the combustion process. The air filter prevents any insects, dust, particles, sand or debris reaching the engine and ensures a good mixture of air and fuel to support performance. Car air filters come in different shapes: panels, circular or cylindrical. They are made of a pleated material which filters the air and may be made of cotton, synthetic paper or foam.
The outside of the filter is a metal can with a sealing gasket that allows it to be tightly held against the engine’s mating surface. The base plate of the can holds the gasket and is perforated with holes around the area just inside the gasket. A central hole is threaded to mate with the oil filter assembly on the engine block. Inside the can is the filter material, most frequently made from synthetic fiber. The engine’s oil pump moves the oil directly to the filter, where it enters from the holes in the perimeter of the base plate. The dirty oil is passed (pushed under pressure) through the filter media and back through the central hole, where it re-enters the engine.
The oil filter is a permanently-sealed metal unit so it isn’t possible for you to perform a visual inspection to determine when it needs to be replaced. There is no instrument, gauge or warning light that comes on to remind you that it is time to change your oil filter; you will not even notice the impact a clogged or dirty oil filter has on your engine. The impact of a clogged or dirty filter could include all or some of the following:
A change of oil filter is one of the most critical maintenance jobs when it comes to your car. Checking your oil filter during regular car services is paramount to keeping your engine healthy.
Reasons to change your Engine Oil Filter on time:
The fuel filter plays a crucial role in maintaining your car's ability to run at peak performance. It has a very important job, which is to keep contaminants, such as dirt and little paint chips, from being sucked down by your engine as it draws fuel. If you wait too long, and full blockage occurs, it's highly unlikely that your car is going to be driving anywhere at all until you take care of the problem.
When it comes down to it, getting the fuel filter changed out is essentially basic maintenance. It should be viewed in the same light as getting your oil changed or your tires rotated. It periodically needs to be done and you're better off doing it before you're left stranded. It's easy to put it off, but if you start to notice symptoms, you'll want to make a quick visit to the shop and get it changed out. There are a number of signs that could indicate a fuel filter problem. Here are five of them:
This could be a sign that your filter is partially clogged and on its way to being completely dammed up.
This could be caused by varying issues, and one of them is a fuel filter problem. But if there's full blockage, your engine won't be able to draw the fuel it needs to get going. At this point there's a good chance you noticed symptoms before, but just didn't get it changed out in time.
If you're just sitting there waiting for the light to change, but your car is feeling all shaky, this could mean that some blockage is occurring and that your engine has begun struggling to draw the fuel that it needs.
If you cruise along the highway with no issue, but then your car struggles to run smoothly at low speeds, this could be one more sign.
This could mean that you finally hit the point where there was just too much blockage.
